Return to Work

PHC asks that leaders connect with an employee while they are off sick and when an employee retuns back to work. This connection will enable leaders to initiate a caring conversation, and to offer early assistance as needed.  See a sample script for touching base with your staff when they are back from short term sick leave.

Below are some conversation starters to help support an employee in their return to work following an extended leave:

  • Work can help to improve the quality of life and well-being of someone who is struggling with a mental health issue.

  • Work provides structure and routine and contributes to a sense of meaning and purpose.

  • Work can promote opportunities for social inclusion and support.

  • If changes to work arrangements are required, the OHA will discuss duty to accommodate with you.

As a leader, be aware of what information the staff member wants shared with others, particularly changes to work arrangements and ensure that you respect the staff member’s confidentiality. An OHA will work with you to support a staff member’s return to work following leave for a mental health issue.
